Fellow leaders and members,
In 2009 I heard an interview on local radio. Some people were talking about a speaking club in Mole Valley and I wondered whether there was anything similar in my area. I couldn’t remember the name of the club, so I just did a search for “speakers club Woking” and discovered the wonderful people at Woking Speakers Club. I checked their website and found out when their next meeting was. At that time they met in a village hall and, having no idea what to expect, went along for a visit. I was warmly welcomed, invited to sit with a member who explained how the meeting worked and what to expect. They applauded when I spoke at the warm-up and invited me to join them at the pub after the meeting. I decided to join that night! That incredible group of people played an important part in helping me to become the person I am today (whether they like it or not!) and I will be forever grateful to them.
Succession Planning – Already?!
Dear District 91 members and leaders,
I know it feels like a strange time to start thinking about the next group of leaders. If you’re anything like me, you’ve been through a bit of a shock at being elected to your role and you’ve experienced some awe when you’ve thought about the task ahead. However, you’ve built relationships with mentors and friends, you’ve had some training and you start to feel like you know what you’re doing. Surely it’s not time to hand over the baton just yet?
Well, no, it’s not quite time yet. You do have another few months to serve your members, see your vision come to fruition and develop your skills in leadership and communication. However, it’s never too early to start thinking about who you can ask to step up. Who can you nurture and encourage by suggesting they stand for election as a club officer or district leader? They may need some time to think about your suggestion, ask questions and seek advice from people they respect and admire.
We have invited the HR Directors of a number of large companies and Government Departments based in London to find out how Toastmasters International can help their organisation strengthen their employees’ communication and leadership skills.
We are holding a breakfast briefing, free of charge, at 08:30 on Tuesday 7th February at Premier Meetings, London Victoria, 82-83 Eccleston Square, London SW1V 1PS.
The briefing lasts about an hour and will give them an introduction to how Toastmasters works, the benefits for their organisation and their staff, and share exciting news about the new Toastmasters Pathways programme.
If you know of an organisation that would like to attend, please email me to register. The briefing is limited to the first 20 confirmed delegates.
Andy Hammond DTM
Club Growth Director
District 91 – UK South

First let me start with a thank you to Porthcawl Speakers for inviting me to their fantastic charter dinner evening. A great event to celebrate their club chartering. Already there are photos on Facebook on the night.
This month launches the club growth initiative and join me in welcoming four new clubs to our district.
Announcement : Toastmaster George Chiesa, DTM, who was elected Club Growth Director at the Spring Conference in May 2016, has been replaced by Toastmaster Andy Hammond, DTM.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Toastmaster Chiesa for his hard work on the District Leadership Team and service to our members.
Andy has been a member since 2001 and has held nearly every club officer role, several more than once. He has also been an Area and Division Governor and Conference Chair.
Andy has a special challenge ahead of him, as he’s come into the role of Club Growth Director a month into the Toastmasters year. He will be seeking to build his wider team and his relationships with Division and Area Directors and those members who are sponsoring pre-charter clubs.
I trust that you will be ready to give Andy all the help and support he needs to play his part in District 91 once again being a Presidents Distinguished District in 2016-17.
If you have any questions, please contact me on email@example.com
Serving as an Area Governor, as it was called then, seemed such a daunting task. There was so much to organise in what seemed like a very short period of time – club officer training, contests, club visits and venues to organise for all the events.
Toastmasters International World Headquarters is quick off the mark and the first to acknowledge the sixtieth anniversary of the longest established club in our District, Aylesbury Speakers. This is an amazing achievement given the challenges that all clubs face.
A wonderful certificate has been received.
The club Treasurer and long standing member, Roger Lord DTM, proudly holds the certificate surrounded by an assembled throng of club members. Read More
