Toastmasters Humorous Speech Contest 2015
Selina Jones, a member of the Aylesbury Speakers Club, affiliated to Toastmasters International, entered her first public speaking contest in September. Toastmasters provide a supportive environment for people who wish to improve their communication, presentation and leadership skills.
Having only been a member for a few months, it was a surprise to Selina and others from her club in Aylesbury that she came first in their Humorous Speech Contest. From there, she took part in the Area Contest made up of 5 clubs and won that too. Not being satisfied with being champion of Buckinghamshire, she then went on to win the division contest. Now being a finalist at district level, which covers the southern part of the UK, the grand prize was now in the offing. Naturally competition was stiff and she had to deliver a polished and entertaining speech to stand any chance of finishing in the top 3.
Being the last speaker is never easy but she was not fazed by it. Having rehearsed her speech over and over and delivering it with passion, Selina was elated to hear her name as the Toastmasters District 91 Champion 2015. Her speech entitled, ‘Take the Stairs’ was a humorous speech based on Selina’s experiences at work and how colleagues used to favour taking the elevator instead of the stairs in a small building. She criticized those who originally labelled the floors incorrectly and colleagues that didn’t follow her regime of using perfectly good stairs.
