Spring Conference Update – Helena Brewer

Helena Brewer, our D91 Spring Conference Director, provides an update of this year’s conference ‘Make Your Communications Matter’.

Why attend the conference?

I first went to a conference because I’d seen fellow members return from them buzzing and energised and full of new ideas. I wondered what I was missing out on. When I went along I discovered it was about the opportunities, learning and networking with like-minded individuals from all walks of life and all levels of experience. Conference provides an enlightening insight into the diversity of our District, from Canterbury to Croydon, Clapham, Covent Garden, Canary Wharf, City Women, Citi Criers and beyond the City Limits, to Camberley, Chiltern and Cheltenham to Cardiff. All members are welcomed at the conference.

What will be happening?

This year, we will be honoured to have as our key note speaker, the CEO of Toastmasters International, Dan Rex.

There will be communication and leadership workshops over the two days for you to enjoy and partake in. You can take away communication tips that you can apply to your next speech. All those delivering the workshops are experienced Toastmaster members. To me this shows the aspirations and development of members that have stepped up, stepped out and seized the opportunity.

The conference is a chance to socialise with other Toastmasters on a whole new scale. It gives the opportunity to chat with everyone you meet, from a past District Director to a member that joined a week ago. There are plenty of breaks to facilitate this, with lunch on both days and of course, the gala dinner. This is an opportunity for all to let their hair down and show your moves on the dance floor, safe in the knowledge there’s no evaluation of these or simply to mingle with new found Toastmaster friends.

And of course, the conference is the venue for the finals of the International Speech and Evaluation Contests. It’s a chance to learn from and be inspired by the best speakers and evaluators in our District.

There is also the business side of the District, conducted at the District Council Meeting. At the spring conference, elections take place for the new District Officers. Every club can vote in the elections so make sure yours is represented.

For all those early risers, we have the AI and Tech Business Breakfast. For the first time at a District Conference we are putting on a breakfast networking event on Saturday morning, featuring talks on Artificial Intelligence and Cyber Security.
