Meet A Toastmaster: Elyssa Schneider

Table Topics Contest Winner 2021/22 (District 91)

Elyssa has been a member of Society Speakers since 2020. She is also a member of Sutton Speakeasy and clubs in Puerto Rico, India, Scotland, and the US.

How do you feel about winning the contest?

When I found out I’d come in first, I was elated; it was an exhilarating moment that took me by surprise. I’ve participated in countless contests these past two years but never made it to District.

What did you learn while preparing for this contest?

With Table Topics I’ve learned it’s about finding ways to connect your content with audience experience. Ask yourself:

  • What message can I impart to my listeners?
  • How can I make it relevant to them?
  • What words can I use to touch and impact their lives?

I’ve found these questions help make your Table Topic truly meaningful.

What would you recommend other people who hesitate about contests?

There’s no safer environment than Toastmasters to compete and put yourself out there. You will find an amazing support group in your fellow club members who will be there to cheer you on. So go for it!

What is your next challenge?

My next challenge is putting together a keynote presentation in preparation for doing public speaking full time. I am thankful to Society Speakers and president Dan Magill – from whom I draw much inspiration – as well as Sutton Speakeasy and the global community of Toastmasters for their support in finding the confidence and courage to take this next step.
