Div H – Debbie Williams

Nominated Candidate for Division H Director

Candidate Statement

I am pleased to share that I have been nominated for the role of Division H Director.  I have enjoyed serving in a variety of roles during my Toastmasters journey with enthusiasm, commitment, and great determination to help and make a difference to others.  I have served as a Club Secretary, VPM, President and Area Director.  The final stage of the appointment process is an election during the District 91 Conference, in May 2021; you have the power to choose your leaders by casting your vote.

Members are at the core of all Toastmaster clubs, and in Division H, working collaboratively has served the Division well and I would like to continue with this ethos by supporting Area Directors to fulfil their goals in having sustainable happy clubs in the Division.  This will be accomplished by building a Division team, having clear goals and motivating Area Directors so that they feel empowered to do their best in their roles and inspire others in the process.  Membership experience is something close to my heart and helping members achieve their education paths for their personal development, while supporting their Clubs, Area and Division is paramount.

Outside of Toastmasters, my background is in International Sales and Business Development having worked for a number of media organisations.  I bring these skills to support this mission in terms of club growth within the Division, making the Division more visible and providing continued learning for club officers.  Toastmasters has impacted my life by providing me with increased speaking confidence and leadership skills.  I love the continual learning process, networking, supporting others and overcoming challenges. I am a member of two Toastmasters clubs, Speakers of Croydon and Excalibur Speakers.

Becoming a Division Director is an opportunity to lead from the front and take part in the overall District Success Plan and support all the clubs in the Division.  I will be committed to the Division in helping it to become stronger, collaborative and successful.  The Division has a diverse range of clubs with exceptional members and I would love to be a part of the Division’s continued success.

Why are you applying to become Division Director?

I have learnt a lot as Area Director for H15 and I would like to further enhance the good work of the current Division Director and continue to serve members in a wider net for the Division. I have experienced first-hand supporting a club to charter, I have supported and collaborated with other Area Directors to put in place the vision of the District for 2020/21, therefore I feel confident to take on the challenge of the Division Director’s role.

What leadership roles have you had in Toastmasters so far and when did you serve in these roles?

Area Director (2020/21)

President (2019/20)

VPM (2018/19)

Club Secretary (2020/21)

What have been your key accomplishments and what have you learnt from in past leadership roles?

VPM – being ambassador and increasing club membership, I learnt not to panic about membership growing too much and understanding churn during renewals

Club Secretary – being accurate and having exceptional listening skills

President – motivating a team to achieve a common goal, making sure everyone was invested in the overall outcome

Area Director – understanding the role of supporting clubs, helping and facilitating clubs to collaborate and support each other, being the liaison person between the District and the clubs, learnt to have patience!

What are the main responsibilities of Division Directors that you are aware of?

To lead and support the Division through the supervision and support of the Area Directors. Ensure that each club achieves its mission and fulfils its responsibilities to its members. Understanding the dynamics and challenges in each area, and provide guidance. Ensure Division is left strong for the next incumbent.
