Relevant work experience and how it relates to Toastmasters and your role as a District leader:

Qualified Civil Engineer with over 30 years experience managing construction projects in various capacities. Construction project management enhances the development of communication and leadership skills which has been a good basis for my contribution to Clubs and our District to date. The construction industry is highly regulated and requires effective management of training needs.

What experience do you have in strategic planning?

My CGD role required the development of a District marketing plan to achieve 2 of the District success goals. Proactive member at Club and District levels in various capacities during the past 6 years. I played an active role in the planning and delivery of successful results at all levels, such as the rebirth of Kent Speakers, Success and growth of H37, D91 Conference, District committees

What experience do you have in the area of finance?

I have managed a limited company for over 30 years, managing strategic financial planning forecasting and budgets. I was a successful volunteer treasurer for a youth community football club for over 10 years. I have been a club treasurer at Kent Speakers and served as a member of the D91 audit committee. Contributed to preparation of District budget and delivery as CGD.

What experience do you have in developing procedures?

I was a member of the Chartered Quality Institute for many years and been responsible for developing and implementing quality procedures and processes such as “Inspection & Test Plans” on multi-million pound projects as a Site Quality Systems Manger. My construction management experience is based on developing systems of work and analysing/resolving adverse trends.

What lessons did you learn from previous leadership positions?

I have improved my effective communication, leadership and relationship building skills since I joined Toastmasters. I have learnt not to assume everyone knows what may seem obvious and the importance of keeping things simple. People will follow a leader who has a clear vision and commit to an objective they understand if effectively consulted

Why do you want to serve as a District leader?

I want to continue to learn, develop and grow by serving our Members. I am passionate about the Toastmasters development programmes, I believe I have the strategic thinking, ability to inspire and relationship building skills, to help envision and create the future.

In your opinion, what are the District mission’s major objectives and how would you work to achieve them?

It is time for rebuilding and reshaping our future by growing our membership with more effective communication and inspiration to promote the Pathways programme. By promoting excellence at District training and Club meetings we will achieve sustainable growth. Encouraging “member training” and not officer training helps succession and inspire the next generation of leaders.

Additional information about yourself:

As President at Kent Speakers my vision was to grow our membership to 50 from a record previous high of 34 and it was exciting for our members. Outlining a 3 year membership and clubs base objective for our District has been equally exciting. Setting a clear vision, encouraging, supporting and inspiring our members is a commitment I will continue to uphold. We will make things better.
