District Harmony Officer: Andy Hammond, DTM
Harmony: Agreement of ideas, feelings, or actions, or a pleasing combination of different parts.
I am both delighted and daunted to be appointed by District Director, Seema Menon, DTM, as the District Harmony Officer for 2026-27. Below is a quick introduction to the role, which we will expand as the year progresses.
This is a new role centred around fostering respect, understanding and positive collaboration across the District, helping create an environment where members feel heard, valued and supported, even when perspectives may differ.
The foundation of my approach will be based on the four building blocks of dialogue*:
- Listening
- Respecting
- Suspending
- Voicing
This approach helps promote open communication, mutual understanding, and constructive dialogue, contributing to a District culture built on professionalism, inclusion, empathy, and teamwork.
Drawing on Toastmasters leadership principles around conflict resolution, the role encourages healthy communication and collaborative problem-solving that strengthens relationships and keeps the focus on shared goals.
The purpose of the role is to support a harmonious District environment where:
- Different viewpoints are respected and considered
- Members feel welcomed, included, and supported
- Communication remains respectful and constructive
- Collaboration and teamwork are encouraged
- Challenges are approached professionally and positively
- Leaders and members can work together effectively toward shared goals
The Guiding Principles for the District Harmony Officer recognise that:
- Differences in perspectives and communication style are natural within diverse teams
- Respectful collaboration often leads to stronger relationships and better outcomes
- Constructive dialogue and active listening help create trust and understanding
- A positive and inclusive culture enables members and leaders to thrive together
I look forward to developing this role with your help and, together, contributing to a harmonious District.
