December Reflection: Pause, Reset and Rise

Growth does not always begin with motion. Sometimes it begins with a pause, a moment to reset the mind and rise with intention.

As we come to the end of December, we also reach an important milestone in our Toastmasters year six months in. This is a powerful moment to pause, reflect and gently reset before we step into the next stretch of the journey.

Before we rush ahead, we invite you to look back.

Reflect on Your Toastmasters Journey

Take a moment to reflect on your journey so far:

  • What have you learned about yourself as a speaker or leader?
  • Which moments stretched you and which ones energised you?
  • What are you most proud of achieving in the last six months?

Now, set your intention for the rest of the year.
Think about the levels you’d like to complete, the Pathway you may want to embark on or the mentoring journey you’d like to explore as a mentor, a mentee, or both.

Toastmasters is a safe space to experiment, practise and grow, so this is the perfect time to set ambitious personal goals not aimed at perfection, but progress.

A Note for Club Officers

To our club officers, this is also a great time to revisit your Club Success Plan:

  • How far have you come as a leadership team?
  • What milestones have you achieved together?
  • Which member successes are you celebrating as a club?

Pause to acknowledge both your efforts and your members’ progress so far.

Rest, Reset and Re-energise

This season is also an invitation to step out of “doing mode.”
Allow yourself time to switch off, rest and take care of your wellbeing. A rested mind creates space for clarity, creativity and better decision-making as you plan the next phase of your Toastmasters journey.

Looking Ahead: Root to Rise Conference

We’re excited to announce that the District 91 Conference 2026 themed Root To Rise will take place on the 2nd and 3rd May 2026 at the beautiful De Vere Latimer EstateChesham, HP5 1UG. Set amidst the tranquil Chiltern Hills and steeped in history, this inspiring venue provides the perfect backdrop for a weekend of learning, growth and connection. November’s Flow With the Fall: A Celebration of Commitment and Community

My dear toastmasters,

Flow with the Fall on 23rd November was a beautiful blend of connection, celebration and inspiration. We want to thank each one of you who joined us and made the day truly special. The energy in the room reflected the very best of our Toastmasters community.

Workshops That Uplifted Us

Our two keynote speakers delivered sessions that resonated deeply:

Chris Hatfield – Reframing Self-Talk

Chris encouraged us to shift our inner dialogue from “I have to” to “I want to”, empowering us to lead with intention. In a generous gesture, he gifted his book Sales Psyche to every contestant, because in our eyes, they were already winners.

Andrew Oseyami – Beyond the Club

Andrew invited us to reflect on what Toastmasters can mean beyond the four walls of our clubs. His session encouraged meaningful connection and intentional engagement with each other.

We were honoured to be joined by Region Advisor Lilian Shaftacola, who sat down with Rekha Mathew, our district podcast host, for a fireside chat. Together, they shared practical, heartfelt tips on strengthening member engagement and building vibrant clubs.

Contest Excellence

The stage was set and our contestants delivered phenomenal performances.

District 91 Humorous Speech Contest Winners

  1. Danny Wang
  2. Isaac Baker
  3. Yii Foong Tien

A special spotlight on Danny Wang, our champion, a new member who has been with District 91 for only nine months. His achievement shows that you don’t need to wait for the “perfect moment” to enter a contest, serve as a leader or even join a club. Talent grows when we step forward and Danny’s courage is an inspiration to all our new and aspiring members.

District 91 Table Topics Contest Winners

  1. Chris Billington
  2. Milo Warshaw
  3. Shenaz Banu

A particularly heartwarming moment came from Chris, a new dad, who welcomed his baby just last Sunday and chose to be with us on Sunday. His dedication and passion for Toastmasters shone through – especially when he went on to win the District Table Topics Contest. What a story to share with his baby!

Corporate Clubs and Community spirit

We also celebrate HSBC 8CS Toastmasters Club, our young corporate club just seven months old, who proudly cheered their member, a District Humorous Speech Finalist. Their commitment to excellence and support for their member reflects the strength of corporate clubs. Your performances raised the bar and made us immensely proud.

Our sincere thanks also to Toast Titans Club from HID Global, who generously gifted books and pens to our attendees, perfect for capturing insights from the day’s workshops and speeches.

Looking Forward

The season of growth continues, and we have plenty lined up:

We have several drop-in sessions planned over the next couple of months.
If there’s anything specific you’d like to learn more about, let us know and we’ll organise a session for you.

Club Officer Training round 2 sessions are coming up soon. Whether you’re a current club officer, considering stepping into leadership or simply curious about what the role entails, please visit our District Calendar to view dates and register.

Even the District Leadership Team undergoes training with our Region Advisor because learning never stops in Toastmasters.

If you’d like to know more about becoming an Accredited Speaker do reach out to Clare Crowther, our district lead who hosted an engaging, interactive session at the Flow with the Fall event.

If you’re interested in mentorship, either to receive a Mentor Buddy or to serve as a mentor, please visit our district website (https://d91toastmasters.org.uk/members/resources/mentoring/) for details.

A Note of Gratitude

To our conference team, contest functionaries, district leaders, venue hosts and each member who attended – thank you.

To those who cheered, learned, laughed, networked and contributed – you proved that even in the face of doubts, challenges (compounded by rains and train closures) and naysayers, this community stands strong.

We’re thrilled to share that this event has already inspired two toastmaster members to volunteer as Contest Chairs for 2026. That spark of motivation is exactly what we hoped this event would ignite.

When we show up for each other, extraordinary things happen. Flow with the Fall succeeded because of YOU.

The full album for the District Contest can be found on our Facebook page.

PQD October Updates: Contests, Connections and Celebrations

My dear Toastmasters,

As October marks Mental Health Awareness Month, let’s take a moment to check in with ourselves and with each other. Sometimes, a simple “How are you really doing?” can make a world of difference. At Toastmasters, we’re more than just speakers and leaders, we’re a community that listens, supports and lifts one another. Remember, self-care isn’t selfish; it’s how we sustain the energy to grow and guide others. You matter and your well being is important. After months of planning, it’s now time to see those plans come to life as contests, trainings and celebrations unfold across our District.

Celebrating success, honouring milestones, bold steps ahead

My dear Toastmasters,

As August draws to a close, I am filled with pride and gratitude for all the work that has taken place across our District this month. Today, on 30 August, our Division Directors came together in true collaboration to deliver a Last Chance Club Officer Training (COT) – giving every club officer ample opportunity to train and step into their roles with confidence.

With the first round of training finishing on 31 August, I want to extend heartfelt thanks to our Area Directors, Division Directors, presenters, zoom masters, timers and most importantly, to every club officer who took time out to train. Your efforts ensure that members gain value, goals are achieved and members see value in the programme. Together, you are building the foundation for success.

Club Success Plans – Leading the Way

I’m delighted to share that 53 clubs have already submitted their Club Success Plan (CSP). This is a fantastic achievement and a strong sign that these clubs are on track to become distinguished, especially as the Club Success Plan is a mandatory requirement this year.

The District deadline is 7 September 2025 and all clubs who submit by then will be part of our Program Quality Incentives (details coming soon!).

A special shout-out to our first two clubs in the District to achieve 6 goals in the Distinguished Club Program:

  • Sustainable Speakers
  • City Limits Speakers

Both online clubs, and both have already submitted their CSP – well done for leading the way!

Contest Season Begins

Next, we look forward to contest season!

  • We’ve already hosted contest drop-in sessions with our Chief Judge and will continue these through September, with support from experienced Toastmasters.
  • Whether your club is running contests for the first time or wants to elevate the member experience, help is at hand.
  • Clubs that conduct contests will also be incentivised

📌 Save the Date: District Humorous Speech Contest & Table Topics Contest will be held in London on 23 November 2025.

Club Visits – Support in Action

Thank you to our Area Directors, who are out visiting clubs and sharing insights. Already, we’ve had 17 club visit reports, with the very first received from Area Director, Kelvin Lam for his visit of Bath Spa Toastmasters in July.

These visits are key to helping every club excel and you can expect your Area Director to connect with you soon, supporting your club’s next level of growth.

Pathways Enhancements

Exciting news! From October 2025, Pathways will be further enhanced to include Successful Club SeriesBetter Speaker Series and Leadership Excellence Series. Select advanced manuals will be integrated into Pathways. This is a great time to engage with Pathways.

Celebrating Achievements

Please join me in congratulating:

  • Our new Distinguished Toastmasters:
    • Barbara Saph, DTM (District Alignment Chair, Salisbury Online Speakers), July 2025
    • Rupa Datta, DTM (District Parliamentarian, Wembley Stadium Speakers), August 2025
  • Our Triple Crown winners for the months of July & August:
    • Leo Shkembi (City Limits Speakers)
    • Abhijeet S Rajadhyaksha (Hamwic Speakers)
    • Tundie Berczi (London Olympians)
    • Kevin Harrington (Reading Speakers)
    • Marc Lottig (Sustainable Speakers)
    • Anis G Rezaei (Sustainable Speakers)

Mentorship Matters

Everyone needs a mentor. A mentor is someone who sees more talent and ability within you, than you see in yourself and helps bring it out of you.

We will be launching our Mentor Buddy program in September, reaching out to mentors across the District for support. Look out for details soon! I had the privilege of seeing my own mentor, Jean Gamester, get elected as the 2nd Vice President at the Toastmasters International Convention in Philadelphia.

Looking Ahead

In September, we will announce this year’s incentives, ensuring that every club, whether with fewer than 12 members or more than 40, has the opportunity to benefit. We’re also excited to launch our District’s Ditch the Nerves podcast and introduce amazing tools to create contest posters and certificates this September. So many exciting things are coming your way, all powered by the awesome hard work of our very own D91 Toastmasters behind the scenes!

As we step into September, we will face challenges and setbacks along the way. But by supporting each other, leading with courage and moving forward together, we will achieve not only our individual goals but also our shared District mission. I want to leave you with the words of Rocky Balboa“It ain’t about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.”

With gratitude,

Seema Menon
