Indra Sikdar – Distinguished Toastmaster

Indra Sikdar - Distinguished ToastmasterIndra Sikdar is currently President of Harrovian Speakers Club. He completed both the Communication and Leadership Tracks of the Toastmasters International Educational programme in March 2015. This means he has achieved the accolade of Distinguished Toastmaster. The Distinguished Toastmaster award is the highest our organization bestows.

We asked Indra Sikdar – Distinguished Toastmaster what achieving this award means to him.

Q: what have you gained by taking the time to complete the Toastmasters Communication and leadership tracks?
A: By completing the Toastmasters Educational Programme I have gained a lot of confidence and I find myself much in demand for both paid and voluntary work. I’ve learned about the power of team effort. It’s helped me with my career as I am a better team-player; a better communicator, and a better networker. Overall it’s helped me to get more done!

Q: What have you gained from your membership personally?
A: When I first started in Toastmasters I found it difficult to make firm friendships and to connect with others. But now having practiced the Toastmasters techniques I have nurtured a lot of good friendships which in turn makes it easier to succeed in life.

Q: Have you used your skills to speak outside your club?
A: I have spoken in many varied places including holding a seminar and breakfast club meeting at London Metropolitan University. I have also spoken in Synagogues, Churches, Harrow Council Chamber and at a Hindu wedding!

Q: When did you first become a member?
A:I have been a member of Toastmasters since October 1999.

Q: Who has helped you during your time in Toastmasters?
A: Many people. I’d particularly like to thank Bob Ferguson for being a supportive mentor and coaching me on various aspects of public speaking. I’m also grateful to Gosbert Chagula, immediate past president of Harrovians. He suggested I stood as club president this year. I’m very glad I took up the challenge! I’m very lucky to have a great committee: Ruth Vishnick as a dedicated VP Education; Warren Sheng, Jesus Parada and Seema Menon all of whom have worked hard to attract members via social media and process membership payments.

Over the year all our club members have been a great support and help to me. I’ve had a lot of good advice particularly from our long-standing members such as Warren Sheng.

Q: What would say to people thinking of joining a club?
A: I would say to anyone considering joining Toastmasters – do join, you will start a journey to achieve your full potential.
